Project Details

Part of the Heart of the City regeneration masterplan, Kangaroo Works is a new build to rent development in Sheffield city centre. The scheme will see the creation of 365 high-quality residential apartments and five commercial units. This design and build project has been commissioned by JV partners Angelo Gordon and Ridgeback Group and is being delivered by Henry Boot Construction Limited (HBC).

The scheme is a mix of high quality one, two and three-bedroom apartments, peaking at 14 storeys. The block has a unique brick façade supporting the industrial heritage of the original Kangaroo Works site, on which the development now stands.

Sustainability is a key part of the regeneration project, which is designed by Whittam Cox Architects, with lead engineer Sweco and MME contractor HE Barnes. The Knauf partitions and ceilings are being installed by subcontractor SCS North. Kangaroo Works has a full Knauf internal specification with numerous Knauf products being utilised in its construction. This includes Knauf Shaftwall, 70mm Stud Walls, Knauf Deflection Head Fire Seal, and Knauf performance plaster boards including: Soundshield Plus, Moisture Panel, Performance Plus and Fire Panel.

Through working with Knauf and the partition subcontractor, Knauf products were put forward as an alternative to the original design by HBC driving efficiencies in both cost and delivery.

Knauf Soundshield Plus boards featured heavily in the building specification, being used in the partitions, linings, and ceilings. Soundshield Plus boards reduce impact and transmitted noise, and therefore are perfect for use in mixed-use residential high-rise buildings like Kangaroo Works.

Similarly ideal was Knauf’s Deflection Head Fire Seal, as it helps buildings to meet stringent fire protection standards. A further benefit of this product is that it takes just moments to apply to Knauf metal framing components, speeding up partition completion.

Using Knauf Deflection Head Fire Seal saves contractors a significant amount of time on site, provides a clean environment, can be cut to size without creating dust and is a lightweight easy-to-handle product. This also maintains a full Knauf Performance Warranty which gives clients, specifiers and contractors assurance that the system will perform to specification.

Work is already underway on the scheme with the structural frame due to top out April 2022 and the project is due to complete in 2023. It will leave a landmark building in the city centre that blends seamlessly with the surrounding Heart of the City regeneration developments.
