The redevelopment of Terminal 2 was part of a £4 billion programme to upgrade, replace and refresh facilities within and around the terminal buildings; it started with the construction of Terminal 5, and then followed by Terminals 1 and 3. And then a new check-in area and forecourt at Terminal 4 created 6000m² of extra space.
Terminal 2 is known as The Queen’s Terminal in honour of Her Majesty The Queen, and opened on her official birthday, 4th June 2014. The terminal has been designed with passengers in mind – BAA wants passengers to choose to travel through Heathrow to get to their destinations and it has made its mission ‘to make every journey better for our passengers and airlines’. In the words of BA’s Chairman, Sir Nigel Rudd: “We are proud to be rebuilding Heathrow and investing in what is undoubtedly one of the UK’s most important assets. In a few years’ time, Heathrow will be largely new, and passengers and airlines will be using bright, modern and practical facilities which allow us to deliver higher standards of service.”
It is promoted as Terminal You – it is all about the needs of the individual passenger. But as well as being great for passengers, it is great for the airlines and the people who work there.
To create the desired look and feel to the new terminal building, and at the same time to meet the strict performance requirements demanded a high specification product. And this is where Knauf Designboard 230 Wood became the ideal material choice for the world-renowned Foster + Partners architectural practice.
As James Leaning, Knauf’s Business Development Director – Finishes, explains:
“The striking interior design called for intricate timber surfaces, incorporating window reveals and curved surfaces. This brief also came with stringent performance criteria. Unlike other timber finishes, Knauf Designboard 230 Wood was able to offer a non-combustible product core with exceptional acoustics, impact resistance and dimensional stability. The result is a high-performance finish that is true to the interior design vision.”
Knauf Designboard 230 is a high-density gypsum fibreboard system which provides a finished surface for walls and ceilings. Precision-engineered and custom-designed for individual projects, Knauf Designboard 230 enables any veneered, coated, printed or sculpted surface to be created resulting in complete design freedom.
