Planning permission sought for Liverpool docklands tower

A planning application has been submitted to Liverpool City Council for a £35 million tower that would be located in the city centre near the Albert Dock.

The Ovatus 1 building will be 27 storeys high if built and developers Prospect Capital and Wilcocks & Wilcocks plan to follow up with an application for the taller Ovatus 2 next year.

Put together, these residential buildings will offer 168 dwellings, including 88 two-bed apartments, 22 single-bed apartments, 14 three-bed apartments and 44 studio flats.

If built, the new towers will help transform the skyline of the city, where an increasing number of skyscrapers are being planned in response to a growing market for city centre living.

Martin Wilcocks of Wilcocks & Wilcocks said: "The project is currently fully funded and financed to ensure the scheme’s deliverability, with enough presales secured to ensure the tower is fully occupied on completion - a testament to the demand for this kind of stock in Liverpool."

The Elliot Group has also applied for planning permission for three skyscrapers this week on a site in the city centre where Pall Mall and Leeds Street join. This £250 million project will see towers of 27, 33 and 39 storeys being built if the plan is approved, providing an extra 1,002 homes.

Its founder Elliot Lawless has also spoken of the recent growth in demand for city centre homes in Liverpool and is involved in 15 projects around the city centre. These will include the development of over 3,000 homes.

Liverpool had the tallest habitable building in Britain in the shape of the Liver Building for decades, but this was overtaken in the 1960s as Britain's first real skyscrapers emerged. However, the city did gain one tall structure, the Radio City Tower (formerly St John's Beacon) - a distinctive 453 ft broadcasting and observation tower.
