Turbine logistics centre to be built in Hull

Siemens has announced that Scunthorpe-based construction company Clugston has won the contract to build its new logistics and customer service centre for matters relating to its wind turbines off the east coast of England.The 132,000 sq ft facility will be located in Hull’s Alexandra Docks, close to the wind turbine factory already being built for the company.Steve Radcliffe, managing director of Clugston, said: “As a local business whose involvement in the Humber area stretches back almost 80 years, we are excited to be playing a part in building this facility which will play such an important role in the growth of the offshore wind industry and establishing the region as the centre of renewable energy in the UK.“In delivering this scheme we will draw upon our local construction skills and supply chain which will create further economic benefits for the region.”Construction is scheduled to begin in November, with a completion date provisionally set for the autumn of 2016.The new facility will be used to maintain the turbines, as well as a holding facility for parts prior to assembly. Once completed, it will be the regional based for Siemens’ offshore service business, and is expected to create as many as 250 jobs for local people.Shaun Cray, Siemens’ general manager of real estate and construction for the Hull project, said: "We are very pleased to be able to award a major contract to a company with a long history in the Humber region and, once again, deliver on our commitment to support local procurement wherever possible."VolkerFitzPatrick is currently building the main factory, and has also subcontracted Hull-based Neville Tucker Heating Limited to take care of mechanical and electrical engineering on site, helping to boost the number of local people set to benefit from the development.An additional £1 million contract to convert existing educational buildings into facilities to train the incoming Siemens workers has also been won by Hull College Group.
