Travelodge in huge expansion plan

Hotel chain Travelodge is planning a massive expansion of its premises in the UK, which will help support hundreds of construction jobs.

The chain is planning to establish 15 new hotels this year in various sites across Britain, with third-party investors providing the finance in partnership with the company.

Some of these will use existing buildings and others will involve some construction and renovation work. Five will be in London, located at or near the Brent Cross, Bromley, Romford Quadrant and Wood Green shopping centres, while another will be in Harrow.

Other planned new hotels will be in Bath, Dudley, Inverness, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Peterhead, Redhill, Stirling, by the Lakeside shopping centre in Thurrock, West Bromwich and Layerthorpe in York.

In addition, the chain has started construction work on a 395-room landmark hotel building in the City of London. Based on Middlesex Street, it is backed by Freshwater and is set to open in 2018.

Explaining the expansion plans, Travelodge chief executive Peter Gowers said: "The march of the low-cost hotel sector continues, fuelled by businesses looking to reduce travel costs and the new generation of independent leisure travellers.

"To meet the growing demand, we are adding further capacity in key cities and expanding to new markets.

"The start of construction on our new flagship 395-room hotel in the heart of the City of London is another milestone for our growth."

He added that the firm has also identified another 250 sites across the UK where it may add further hotels to its portfolio. He did not state whether these would be mostly acquisitions of existing properties or constructed from scratch, but said the new hotels would expand both the provision of low-cost accommodation in London and across the various regions.

Last week, the Bury Free Press reported that the chain is seeking to build a new hotel in Bury St Edmunds, with an attached Starbucks. If built, it will have 80 rooms.
