Planning permission for new Manchester skyscraper

The latest Manchester residential skyscraper project has received planning permission, with 750 apartments set to be built across a cluster of towers.

Hong Kong developer Far East Consortium (FEC) has been given the green light to go ahead with the Angel Meadow project, which will see four blocks being built around Angel Meadow park on the north-eastern edge of the city centre. The tallest of these will rise to 40 storeys.

This will stand close to the 387 ft CIS Tower - with the building containing 333 apartments, as well as retail and commercial space on the ground floor. 

The Co-op is one of the backers of the new £235 million development in partnership with FEC, which is a key element of the transformation of the NOMA district. Located close to Victoria railway station and several other new apartment developments, the district represents an extension of the city centre northwards and eastwards.

Around 750 construction jobs will be supported by the project, which will commence early next year. The whole scheme will take around four years to concluded, but the first homes should be ready for residents to move into in 2019. 

Head of commercial and investment property at The Co-op Rob Bignold said: "We are delighted that planning permission for Angel Meadow has been granted and look forward to construction starting next year.

"High quality residential is central to our vision of NOMA being a work-live-play neighbourhood and will support Manchester’s continued growth by helping the city attract and retain crucial talent."
The transformation of Angel Meadows will mean the area takes on a very different character to days of yore.

In the early days of the city's industrialisation, more than 7,000 people lived in the vicinity. Far from the smart modern apartments that professionals will be enjoying from 2019, it was a notorious and overcrowded slum with a very high rate of infant mortality.
