£12m schools award for Morgan Sindall
International development company Morgan Sindall is celebrating the award of a new £11.9 million contract for the delivery of new school premises at three educational establishments in east London.Focusing on the London borough of Newham, the contract will see the extensive refurbishment and extension of Upton Cross Primary School, Portway Primary School and Calverton Primary School over the coming months.It will require an extensive reworking of the primary school facilities at the three schools, delivering an additional 1,000 student places for the start of the 2014/15 academic year.Upton Cross Primary School is set to benefit from the creation of new classrooms at two sites, while Portway Primary School will see the construction of a new two-storey block - creating an additional ten classrooms and a new learning centre.Meanwhile, Calverton Primary School will see a second-storey extension to the existing school, creating eight new classrooms and a special education needs area.Adrian Barnes, area director of Morgan Sindall's London office, commented: "Increased pressure on local schools to provide spaces for a growing population is a key issue across the south-east."Newham is London's fastest growing borough and we are pleased to be working with the council to deliver these facilities to ensure they can meet this growing demand."Councillor Quintin Peppiatt, executive member for children's services at the local authority, added the area's ongoing Primary School Expansion Programme will have delivered an additional 10,000 school places for primary students across the district by 2015.Launched in 2008, the initiative has seen the upgrade of a number of educational establishments across the area, as well as the construction of whole new primary schools in some areas.Overall, the three schools in Newham are benefiting from funding provided by the £1 billion Improvement and Efficiency South East framework. It includes a set of collaborative guidelines with the principle objective of driving efficiencies and service improvements.
