New homes boost for Sunderland

A raft of new residential properties are set to be built in Ryhope, Sunderland by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) in partnership with Sunderland City Council and developer Gentoo. In total, the project will see the construction of 143 new properties over the coming months, with all new homes set to meet level five of the government's Code for Sustainable Homes. This means each of the new properties will benefit from excellent levels of insulation and energy efficiency, with 'smart' gas and electricity metres to be installed as standard to help future occupiers have a better idea of their annual fuel usage. In addition, each of the homes will feature solar photovoltaic panels to further reduce their energy demand from the national grid and provide considerable savings for tenants. All of the new properties will be built of affordable rent at the Ryhope site bar one, which will be a bespoke bungalow for an owner/occupier with specific health requirements. It promises to offer a major boost to housing in the area and is a fine example of national and local government working successfully with private sector partners to deliver much-needed accommodation to tackle an ongoing crisis in the provision of new homes across the UK.Leader of Sunderland City Council councillor Paul Watson commented: "Working in partnership with housing providers like Gentoo we can look forward to providing people with a wide range of new properties, to suit their individual economic and accommodation needs."We need these news homes to be affordable, energy efficient and to become a valuable part of the sustainable communities in which they are being built."Construction at the site is now underway by Gentoo, with the project aiming for completion by March 2015.Karen Anderson, area manager at the HCA, added it is "great to see" how the department's investment will have a considerable beneficial impact on the housing sector in Ryhope, ensuring local people have access to affordable homes within their community.
