Willmott Dixon to build new Tyneside leisure centre

The contract for the construction of a new South Tyneside leisure centre has been awarded to developer Willmott Dixon.

As part of the £11 million project, the firm will utilise the latest in drywall and building materials to deliver a new facility that will help in the regeneration of the area.

It forms part of the masterplan of renovation by South Tyneside Council and will become a hub for leisure facilities in the region.

The premises are to be state-of-the-art and will feature a six-lane swimming pool, sports hall, dance studio, library and customer service centre, while the project aims to be as green as possible by reusing much of the old materials that are already on site.

Gerry Gray, Mott MacDonald's project director, said: "Our appointment on this project continues a strong relationship between Mott MacDonald and Willmott Dixon in the north-east."

"Previous projects include the award-winning Houghton-le-Spring Primary Care Centre in Sunderland and the new police headquarters in Newcastle city centre."

Work on the new building is predicted to get underway in August, once the developer has secured official planning consent and demolition work at the proposed site has been completed.

In addition to the new leisure centre, the council will also be tendering for construction of a raft of new housing in South Tyneside, as well as delivery of a new supermarket for local residents in the coming months.

Elsewhere, Willmott Dixon was recently named among 13 architect, engineering and building contractors that will take part in major renovation works at Bristol International Airport.

The £150 million project will construction of a new underground fuel storage facility for the airport, as well as office accommodation for airport staff, enhanced public transport infrastructure and increased parking.

Set to take approximately four years to complete, the works form part of ambitious plans for the airport as it looks to increase its capacity as a regional transport hub.
