DIY 'helping British properties meet changing needs'

UK property owners are embracing DIY in order to make their homes better meet their changing needs over time, as many people are now staying in their present house for longer.

Michael Holmes, a spokesperson for the Northern Homebuilding and Renovating Show, said a lot of architects and builders head along to the event each year, but in 2012 there will also be a growing proportion of members of the public in attendance, with many keen to brush up on their DIY skills.

Typical projects which people are interested in gaining advice on include loft conversions, the fitting of wooden flooring or erecting an extension.

Mr Holmes commented: "Once they would have said 'I can't be bothered to do that, I'll employ somebody else to do all that for me', people are now preparing things themselves and doing it themselves. I think there is a renaissance in the DIY market."

He noted that most people are capable of taking on these more complex DIY tasks, it is simply a matter of setting aside enough time to carry them out properly. Indeed, in many cases, UK homeowners are now utilising their leisure time to make improvements to their property.

The Northern Homebuilding and Renovating Show is to take place at the Harrogate International Centre from November 2nd to 4th and will provide professionals and members of the public alike the opportunity to receive expert advice on a range of home projects.

Earlier this month, director of the National Home Improvement Council Andrew Leech argued that UK property owners are more willing than ever to get their hands dirty and take on increasingly complex DIY tasks in order to bring down the costs of home renovation.

"Currently, many homeowners and tenants are looking much more closely at their finances and, therefore, are tackling minor repair and improvement jobs that they might otherwise have employed an expert to carry out," he concluded.
